Just an update before the holidays...

Heya folks,

It's official: I'm a civilian. Friday was my last day in the Navy. Over the weekend, the wife and I plotted course across the United States, embarking on a 19-hour drive from Virginia to Texas. We've got an apartment all set up, but the movers won't arrive with our stuff until Dec. 2nd, so we're staying at my mother-in-law's house for the week. I had a big job interview yesterday, so keep your fingers crossed, because at the moment I'm a jobless bum. My mummy would be so disappointed.

Well, that's all I got, folks. I don't even have a relevant picture to share with you, so I'll leave you with this:

For some reason, my wife thinks this picture is amusing. I fail to see the humor.

Welcome back dude! A fully civilianised Matt ya say! You'll need to change your name to civilian Matt now.

Good luck with the moving in and with the job. I'm sure you'll fit into civi-street just fine!

Thanks bud. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it, I think. "I'm not in the Navy..." I mean, I've been doing th Navy thing for ten years. Yesterday was my first job interview ever! I felt like a kid playing dress-up in my dad's suit. I felt like a fish out of water.

Still, it's an amazing sense of freedom. Very exciting times :)

Matt -
Now you need to save up enough money to buy a boat and do your own sailing. I too am currently an unemployed bum. My wife is taking a full-time job in our newly elected congressman's office (she ran his campaign) starting in January. We are going to do some role reversal for a while and I will probably do some contract work to make up the salary difference.

I could send my brother around to your in-laws place with a boatswain's pipe if you get feeling nostalgic. ;)

Hey, a boat is a good idea. I could set out for some deep water sailing and get back to my roots. Wait... where's the nearest oceanic coast to Dallas? Crap!

Your brother plays the boatswain's pipe, eh? Personal hobby or a bit o' Navy blood (or both)? Either way, I don't think I've been out long enough yet to feel nostalgic. Although, I did notice that the closer I got to getting out, the more appreciation I had for the Navy. As I've made my way out from amidst the tangle of trees, I've been better able to appreciate the view of the forest, or something like that.

Thanks for stopping by :)

Ha! Super-soft...

You'll always be Sailor Matt to me, dude.

Fingers crossed on the job, mate.

I've been watching with interest your countdown to freedom and add my congratulations to those of your friends.
I'll be interested to know what the effects of culture shock will be. Just becoming part of the civilian working world will be a real jolt.
I hope you'll write about it.

I definitely will! The transition has been quite an upheaval. Now that I've finally settled a bit, I hope to update this blog on a more regular schedule.

Thanks for stopping by!
