What's New?

Hey there, fellow bloggers! It's been a month since my last post, so I'm taking Marky's lead: it's time to pull over, sit my butt down and hammer somthing out. So, what's new? Well, I am currently sitting in an airport in Memphis, waiting on my flight back to Dallas. I had to take a quick trip to Florida to handle some business, and my return trip consists of flying from Sarasota to Atalnta to Memphis to Dallas. Ugh! What a long, miserable day.

On a more pleasant note, I am pleased to report that I'm an official, card-carrying student at UTA. I am registered for Calculus1, Physics 1 and a communications class this fall. How exciting! I've never actually GONE to college before. My General Studies bachelor's degree was really just a bunch of correspondence exams, and my MBA from U of Phoenix was done online. I actually get to sit through a real college class! I'm sure the excitement will wear out after my first homework assignment...

Work is going good. I'm now in charge of maintaining the equipment that make Lay's and Ruffles potato chips. I manage the day to day ongoings of the mechanics on my shift and cover emergency calls for the entire plant, and I coordinate, plan and schedule long term projects for my equipment. Fun stuff.

Life is good, and the debt is slowly abating. I really took a hit during my three months off work (drained my down payment for house down to nothing!) but we're looking to recover and buy our first home in November. Yay for us!

So, how're yall doin'? Let's here it, folks!

I'm good! Same old, same old.

So, now that you're a student, do you have to join a frat house? Or have I been taking movies far to seriously?

Good to see you back mate. Good luck with college and work. Glad you're enjoying it!

I'm quite confused, friend. I left a lengthy comment yesterday, presumably on your blog, but it's not here. Now I don't know who's blog I posted that on...

Anyway, a few comments/fyi's.

Since it's your first house, I'm sure you know all about the $8000 tax credit from the gov? Only works if you purchase before Dec 1, though.

Being a vet, are you eligible for the VA loan? My brother got some kind of loan through the Army which required a 0% downpayment. However, by doing this I think it made his interest rate a little higher.

Anyway, just thought I'd share. Good luck. Don't watch too much HGTV. And enjoy college!

@marky: Of COURSE I'm joining a frat house! That's really the only reason I'm going back to school.

@logankstewart: sorry about the comment dilema, my friend. Someone out there is probably gonna be very confused :)

Thanks for the tips, too. I definitely plan on buying a house in November to take advantage of the tax credit, and we'll probably be using the VA loan option because we won't have much cash to put down (and you're right... the interest rate is just a tad higher). Also, we have a relative who buys forclosures and turns them into rental properties. She's offered to buy a foreclosed home for us with cash (if we find one we like), which will net us instant equity if we get one cheap enough. She can then load the house up with new carpet, paint and appliances, etc. and sell it to us with the upgrade costs built in. So, that's the plan!

Great news there, Matt. Sounds like you got an excellent plan.
